For decades, the inhabitants of Zhongwei City in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region watched a sea of sand ebb closer and closer to their homes, covering their streets, crops and roads, cutting them off from trade, transport and prosperity.They were helpless against the rising tide of the Tengger Desert. Farmers were forced to leave their homes as the sand engulfed their properties.
